the life in front of me

I’ve got to change my wicked ways / there’s no one left now from my younger days / my enemies are getting close / I’ve got to jump / before the overdose / and give that good road one more try / where there’s a chance / that hasn’t passed me by / to live the life in front of me / not what has been / or what will be / so many nights I lie alone / and there’s no talking on the telephone / only the voices in my head / and in a dream / I see that flower bed / I want to wake up with a shout / and let them know / that I’m not down and out / and grab the life in front of me / not what has been or what will be / well every dog might have its day / but soon the rainbow seems to fade away / somewhere along the line we’re told / don’t waste your time / when there’s no pot of gold / but I might give it one more shot / I’ve got to strike / now while the iron is hot / and claim that life in front of me / not what has been or what will be / and live the life in front of me / not what has been or what will be.

the fight

It’s all unwinding now / and the worst is yet to come / I can feel it in my bones / I just can’t talk to anyone / well the world’s just not the same / when you haven’t got a friend / when no one knows you by your name / then they don’t wonder where you’ve been / I’d like to go back to my home / but there’s no home left in sight / and so I walk the streets alone / until I don’t know wrong from right / and then I go back to the fight / and there’s no country that I’ve seen / where they’ve really got your back / where they say just what they mean / and a fact is still a fact / it’s a never-ending war / where they all take what they can get / there’s a lock on every door / and one young life for every debt / I’d like to go back to my home / but there’s no home left in sight / and so I walk the streets alone / until I don’t know wrong from right / and then I go back to the fight / I go back to the fight / I go back to the fight.

beautiful wind

Almost took a taxi / caught the bus instead / lie down town / no bills to pay / a pillow under your head / looking out the window / through some distorted view / and there is no end to the beautiful wind / almost caught the ferry / took a boat instead / lie down arms / no sea to churn / no burden under your head / somewhere on the outside / circling the blue / and there is no end to the beautiful wind / beautiful wind / beautiful wind / take me away / I just want to begin / show me the sun / show me the sea / grow me some wings / I just want to go free / throw me a dream and I’ll go riding again / there is no end to the beautiful end / almost took a dead end / almost missed the sign / almost traded priceless rings / for things that only seemed fine / looking out the window / and all is bright and new /  there is no end to the beautiful wind / beautiful wind / beautiful wind / take me away / I just want to begin / show me the sun / show me the sea / grow me some wings / I just want to go free / throw me a dream and I’ll go riding again / there is no end to the beautiful end there is no end to the beautiful wind.

my life was a taxi

My life was a taxi / and I always paid for the ride in back / sometimes right there at the moment / other times / long after the fact / now I’ve seen every street in this city / and know every dark corner by heart / but the next time I need to go searching / I’ll negotiate the fare / from the start.

ocean of sleep

Sailing on an ocean of sleep / the deep blue water rushing by below / and though I wasn’t ready to go / when the slumber came to take me away / I was too tired to resist it for another day / now I’m traveling through another land / and everything I planned has fallen far behind / it’s impossible to know the night from day / or what I might find / when I open up my eyes / sailing on an ocean of sleep / the deep blue water taking me away / the daylight lost and nothing left to keep / I just got too tired / to remain here for another day.

the greatest terror

The greatest terror I ever faced / was being tossed into this world / without any money / and the greatest joke I ever heard / wasn’t in any way funny / it was this talk about equality / and how all are really equal in the end / in death perhaps / but in this kind of life / it only comes down to the money / my friend.
