her road

Well there’s a road that winds into the piney hills / a river runs there so I’m told / and when she leaves I’ll lay my head back and go up / to climb those piney hills alone / because her road isn’t going where I’m going / and her dreams they don’t seem to think about me / I feel bad but I guess I’m better off knowing / that what won’t be / just won’t be / it never will be / now there’s a woman who is lying on the bed / her blue eyes full of thoughts untold / she sings a love song somewhere deep inside her breast / but that’s not mine to know / because her road isn’t going where I’m going / and her dreams they don’t seem to think about me / I feel bad but I guess I’m better off knowing / that what won’t be / just won’t be / it never will be / now there’s a feeling that I’ve felt so many times / a lonesome swirling kind of hole / and when it finds me I’ll climb up into the pines / as she drives by below / because her road isn’t going where I’m going / and her dreams they don’t seem to think about me / I feel bad but I guess I’m better off knowing / that what won’t be / just won’t be / it never will be / it never will be.

say let me go

Well I don’t want to live without you / but I don’t want to take your freedom / last night I had a dream about you / here’s how it goes / we both were standing in a field / when suddenly you started growing / you tried to keep the change concealed / but still you rose / don’t say you don’t want to see me crying / don’t say you’ll be back cause we both know / that old love we knew is slowly dying / now I’m standing in the wrong place / if you need some space to grow / say let me go / let me go / say let me go / let me go / say let me go / let me go / say let me go / I tried to wrap my arms around you / but found I couldn’t clasp my fingers / there in that field where first I found you / I was alone / and then I brought an axe to cut you / but never found the strength to use it / and so I turned back to my music / and played so slow / don’t say you don’t want to see me crying / don’t say you’ll be back cause we both know / that old love we knew is slowly dying / now I’m standing in the wrong place / if you need some space to grow / say let me go / let me go / say let me go / let me go / say let me go / let me go.

rise again

And if you die right now / I know somehow the soul of you is gonna rise / and I believe the bird inside your chest / is gonna take you free / the sun is spinning in a whirlpool of glass / and as it turns / it burns the same unleaded gas / that makes you dream / the shadow underneath your perching pole / is sometimes called the hemisphere / the whirlpool outside your windowsill / goes spinning down below / and as you journey down / you balance on the wind / you taste the darkness / ‘til your conscience pulls the covers back again / bright and yellow comes the morning / it takes the mountain by surprise / beneath your feet a hole is forming / but if you die right now / you’re gonna rise / rise again / the doctor gives you sleeping pills to sleep / but they don’t keep the fear away / it lies beneath your bed / and fills your head with shadows from the plain / your bird is singing in a forest of its own / you tear the sheets away / and stare into a light you’ve never known / bright and yellow comes the morning / it takes the mountain by surprise / beneath your feet a hole is forming / but if you die right now you’re gonna rise / rise again.

the life in front of me

I’ve got to change my wicked ways / there’s no one left now from my younger days / my enemies are getting close / I’ve got to jump / before the overdose / and give that good road one more try / where there’s a chance / that hasn’t passed me by / to live the life in front of me / not what has been / or what will be / so many nights I lie alone / and there’s no talking on the telephone / only the voices in my head / and in a dream / I see that flower bed / I want to wake up with a shout / and let them know / that I’m not down and out / and grab the life in front of me / not what has been or what will be / well every dog might have its day / but soon the rainbow seems to fade away / somewhere along the line we’re told / don’t waste your time / when there’s no pot of gold / but I might give it one more shot / I’ve got to strike / now while the iron is hot / and claim that life in front of me / not what has been or what will be / and live the life in front of me / not what has been or what will be.

the fight

It’s all unwinding now / and the worst is yet to come / I can feel it in my bones / I just can’t talk to anyone / well the world’s just not the same / when you haven’t got a friend / when no one knows you by your name / then they don’t wonder where you’ve been / I’d like to go back to my home / but there’s no home left in sight / and so I walk the streets alone / until I don’t know wrong from right / and then I go back to the fight / and there’s no country that I’ve seen / where they’ve really got your back / where they say just what they mean / and a fact is still a fact / it’s a never-ending war / where they all take what they can get / there’s a lock on every door / and one young life for every debt / I’d like to go back to my home / but there’s no home left in sight / and so I walk the streets alone / until I don’t know wrong from right / and then I go back to the fight / I go back to the fight / I go back to the fight.

beautiful wind

Almost took a taxi / caught the bus instead / lie down town / no bills to pay / a pillow under your head / looking out the window / through some distorted view / and there is no end to the beautiful wind / almost caught the ferry / took a boat instead / lie down arms / no sea to churn / no burden under your head / somewhere on the outside / circling the blue / and there is no end to the beautiful wind / beautiful wind / beautiful wind / take me away / I just want to begin / show me the sun / show me the sea / grow me some wings / I just want to go free / throw me a dream and I’ll go riding again / there is no end to the beautiful end / almost took a dead end / almost missed the sign / almost traded priceless rings / for things that only seemed fine / looking out the window / and all is bright and new /  there is no end to the beautiful wind / beautiful wind / beautiful wind / take me away / I just want to begin / show me the sun / show me the sea / grow me some wings / I just want to go free / throw me a dream and I’ll go riding again / there is no end to the beautiful end there is no end to the beautiful wind.
